Wylie ISD Education Foundation Provides Graphics Internship

Part of Wylie ISD’s Career and Technical Education mission is to prepare students to succeed in the 21st Century through quality partnerships with business, industry and the Wylie community.  Three students from Wylie East High School are gaining real world experience thanks to one such partnership just announced between WEHS and the Wylie ISD Education Foundation, Inc.

Mrs. Lori Villarreal, the Executive Director of the Foundation, worked with her board members to create an internship program that would help serve the graphic design needs of the Foundation while providing hands-on experience with a real client for select WISD students.  Wylie East Seniors, Jonathon Reyes, John Taylor and Calvin Thomas are students in Mrs. Jennifer Holcomb’s Graphic Design practicum level course and were chosen to pilot the internship program.

“We have big ideas to support our Wylie ISD teachers and students and to get them moving, we need graphic design talent,” Mrs. Villarreal said. “Wylie ISD has a strong program as is evidence by the production we’ve seen so far and we couldn’t be more excited about the opportunity that lies ahead.”

The students will work on various projects for the Foundation, such as the social media campaign for the Foundation’s annual Employee Contribution Campaign, signage and printed materials for the Boots ‘N Barbecue Gala, as well as other Foundation projects throughout the year. As an added bonus, the Wylie Economic Development Corporation has announced that it will sponsor a $750 scholarship for each student as part of its ongoing workforce training and retention efforts.

“Internships like this are instrumental in ensuring that our students graduate with the knowledge and skills they need to be successful,” Mrs. Holcomb said.  “We are thrilled to be working with Wylie ISD Education Foundation and the students are ready to jump in and start designing.”
