Living in Wylie

Living in Wylie

“Wylie, TX - One of the Best Places to Live” - Wylie was named the 25th Best Place to Live in the Country by Money Magazine. Why?

Money noted the community’s fondness for “getting together for good times.” Listing the Wylie Chamber of Commerce Championship Rodeo held each fall, summertime’s Bluegrass on Ballard, the Wylie 500 Pedal Car Races each spring and the Wylie Arts Festival, held during the holidays, the magazine recognized that Wylie families enjoy to gather, celebrating the things that make the city, state and nation great.

Money noted Wylie’s community spirit, embodied in such events as the Week of Compassion held each November, when commodities are gathered for the Wylie Christian Care Center. Last year, citizens gathered to dedicate a bronze sculpture, “Heroes of Wylie,” on the grounds of the Public Safety Complex. Dedicated to police and fire personnel, it is a visual symbol of the gratitude Wylie citizens have for their first responders.

Wylie’s desirable location and how it lends itself to indoor and outdoor recreation was noted by Money’s editors; the one-mile hike and bike trail on the municipal complex will soon be expanded to two miles, thanks to a grant from Collin County. A 22-acre Blackland Prairie restoration project is underway, providing a centralized pastoral backdrop for activities and learning.

The low crime rate was part of Money’s list; despite a 6-percent increase in population, last year’s crime rate dropped 28 percent. Wylie has again been honored by safety education organization SafeWise; this year, it has been named the 19th safest city in Texas. Wylie Police Department engages in continual outreach activities to strengthen the relationship between the community and its officers. Wylie Fire Rescue maintains an ISO-1 Public Protection Classification Rating, the top rating by the Insurance Services Office, making homes and offices less expensive to insure. Only 56 municipalities hold a Class 1 rating, placing Wylie in the top 12 percent nationwide. WFR continues to train and add cutting-edge rescue techniques and equipment to its first-response arsenal.
